Walt Disney Park and Resorts have announced that they will be working together with Fox Filmed Entertainment and James Cameron to install Avatar themed areas in its parks. They have formed an agreement so that they will work together on creating these lands; allowing guests to experience Avatar close up and enjoy the universe created in the famous film. The first themed land is planned at Walt Disney World and will be placed in the Animal Kingdom Park. As the Avatar stories have a theme of working in harmony with nature it was felt that it would fit in the Animal World. The construction of the area is likely to start in 2013.
The agreement between Fox, Cameron and Disney will allow Disney to have the global theme park rights and they will be able to produce themed lands at other sites as well. These have not yet been announced. There will be creative consultants made up of Lightstorm Entertainment Group, James Cameron and Jon Landau and they will work together with Walt Disney Imagineering to create the lands.
Putting those teams together is felt to be guaranteed to get a good result, according to the president and chief executive of the Walt Disney Company, Robert Iger. Avatar set a box office record and was felt by many to be the most visually stunning and innovative film ever and so to recreate some of this imagery for Disney visitors to enjoy, should prove very popular indeed.
