In northeastern Drenthe you will find a unique combination of moor, heath, forest, sand drifts and lovely little meres. Borger lies on a hilly ridge called Hondsrug. This ridge forms a natural border between the elevated sand plateau of Drenthe and the fenland communities of Drenthe and Groningen. A beautiful place to visit is the “Dwingelerveld”, located within cycling distance from the Forest Park. This is one of the largest damp heath areas in Western Europe. Plants and wildlife that thrive here are scarcely found anywhere else in the Netherlands. You can also visit the National Information Center for Megalithic Tombs in Borger. A tough builder of megalithic tombs, a mother of three from the Bronze Age and an Iron Age farmer will tell you their stories about daily life in these prehistoric times. If you prefer to spend an exciting day out together with your kids, make sure to visit the Traffic Park in Assen. Here children can try driving their own car, jeep, train or boat. One can even get a driving license before the age of 18 here! The Emmen Northern Zoo is also a must. It exhibits different species from around the world. Animals are maintained in their own natural environment, such as, for instance, the savanna.
