This typical old Gozitan village lies in the West of Gozo Island and was already inhabited centuries ago, with old houses - still visible in the heart of the village - showing fine examples of decorated stone balconies. Gharb was created a parish in 1679 and a new, baroque church was built between 1699 and 1729. Its elegant facade has been compared with Borromini\'s S. Agnese in Piazza Navona, Rome. The village square, appearing in many Gozo\'s postcards, is a fascinating folklore museum housing all sorts of memorabilia retelling the Islands\' rural history. Gharb lies in some of Gozo\'s most delightful countryside, close to Dbiegi, the highest hill on the Island and its craft village. In the surroundings of Gharb is the quaint Chapel of San Dimitri, built on the cliffside and the Basilica ta\' Pinu, Malta\'s pre-eminent shrine to the Virgin Mary.
