The picturesque town of Labin is situated by the sea, overlooking a 320 m high hill. Its ancient name was Albona (or Alvona) which in the Celtic language means "a town on a hill". After the Illyrians, the town came under Roman rule, then followed the rule of Byzantium, the Franks, the Venetians, Napoleon, the Hapsburgs, and finally the Italians. Each of them has left their own indelible mark upon Labin's identity. The town still preserves the spirit of its noble past, while its beauty continues to draw large numbers of tourists. Its uptown is an excellent example of a city acropolis, consisting of medieval walls, narrow streets and countless precipitous steps which lead upward to finally reveal a spectacular view. Today the ancient part of town hosts various artisans, whose studios and galleries are scattered throughout the narrow streets. You will have to pass “Torion“, a medieval tower, to gain access to the old town. Just below the tower you will find the picturesque city square with loggia, which offers shows and entertainment during the summer. The cannon atop the tower dates back to the time of Austrian occupation.Labin also makes an ideal starting point for daily tours along the fascinating and untouched coasts of eastern and central Istria, with their medieval castles and fortresses, where time seems to stand still. Rabac is a large resort town on Kvaerner Bay, just 6 km southeast of Labin. Formerly a small fishing port of just three dozen homes, Rabac has grown in recent years to become a resort town with numerous villas and apartment buildings. Here you will find many possibilities for spending your time: sailing, a casino, fishing, boat trips, a museum, water sports, deep sea fishing, forests, horseback riding, hunting, and many others.
